A Great “Pop In” at Bohanan’s San Antonio

by FFN on June 19, 2010

Recently I stayed in the Historic downtown area in San Antonio at the Gunter Hotel. Which might I say has a hotel has it’s own unique charm and interesting ghost stories. But this however is a food blog of sorts and so I will just speak to the delights of my taste buds in this article. My coworker and I went to Bohanan’s ( http://www.bohanans.com/index.html), we were there to work a show and wanted to ensure we got one good meal while working. Bohanan’s  is an old world steakhouse at it’s finest. The wait staff was dressed in black suits. This intimidated me at first, don’t get me wrong I can dress to the nines with the best of them. But let me remind you I was working so I was casual nice, not dressy. But it is San Antonio and there are a lot of tourists and they assured me my attire was fine. And there were people dressed similar to me, dressed a little more up from me etc. so good eclectic mix.

Ok now back to the yummy food experience! I already knew I was having a filet, (I mean it’s a steakhouse and I already cook myself some mean seafood!) I just wanted to see what extra savory I was having to compliment my filet. The waiter came by and we ordered some water and a nice bottle of Malbec, (see pic). When the water came out they also set down some sweetened cream cheese type of spread with jalapenos on it and toasts on which to spread it on. Quite different and tasty!  I ordered my filet (medium rare of course) with sauteed spinach. I additionally ordered the Salad  Superb   with avocados, hearts of palm etc. My coworker ordered the Kurobuta Pork Chop, with Garlic and herb cheese grits and glazed apples in cinnamon reduction, I also believe he had a caesar salad. Kurobuta Pork for those of you who don’t is a Japanese name for a certain quality of pork, further explained in this article.

This was one of the compliments to our great meal!

The salads came out and they were scrumptious, fresh and had just the right amount of dressing on them. Additionally were brought out a different bread basket that had a roll in it that kind of reminded me of an herb version of my grandma’s refrigerator rolls, an added bonus. Then both of our dishes showed up, (see pics). We both devoured our food. The meat melted in your mouth and all of the extras were equally as delicious. My sauteed spinach was perfectly sauteed, and I know because I am fussy about that! This was an absolutely delish meal and we barely left a scrap on the plate. We were both sad we did not have anymore room when we saw the flaming desserts prepared all around us.

If you are in San Antonio and want to experience something besides some of the Riverwalk fare with that touch of old steakhouse elegance, “pop in” to Bohanan’s, I think you will be quite happy you did.
